What are castration rings?
An elastrator ring placed above the neck of the scrotum will cut off all blood vessels and after a period of time (usually three to six weeks) lead to that part of the scrotum and its contents (mainly the testicles) dropping off. Some cattle breeders prefer this method because it is a non-invasive method of castration.
How do castration bands work?
Banding involves using an elastrator (Figure 3) to place a heavy elastic band around the neck of the scrotum with both testes inside. The band cuts off blood flow to the testes and scrotum, which atrophy over a short period of time and slough off.
Do castrating rings hurt?
Without effective pain relief, rubber ring castration of lambs is acutely painful and can also produce chronic pain. The potential of novel, smaller rubber rings to reduce this pain substantially has been investigated.
Does banding goats hurt?

Is banding castration painful?

Can you neuter a RAM?
Ram lambs are normally castrated for management reasons. When male and female lambs are reared together there is a risk of unwanted breeding. There is also a perception that meat from rams is less acceptable to consumers than meat from wethers due to taint. Castration eliminates these problems.
Is banding a dog legal?
We just want to pass the word and try to educate people that ‘Banding’ is not an acceptable way to neuter dogs. From a legal standpoint it is considered animal abuse.
How long does it take for goats balls to fall off after banding?
In a proper banding, the testicles will become hard and shrink, as will the scrotum, until it is flat and leathery. Within two months, it should naturally detach from the body.
How much does it cost to band a goat?
Castrating older goats costs $80 or more from a veterinarian, but banding goats lowers the cost to $20 for the band castration tool, less than $10 for 25 elastic rings, and $0.50 per a dose of CDT vaccine.
