What does our Competent Crew course entail? You’ll live on a yacht, spending a week cruising around the sunny Ionian Islands. Along the way you’ll learn sail handling and trimming, nautical terms, useful knots, and how to steer the boat on a compass course. The course is good fun and a great way to learn how to sail!

How long is competent crew course?

Sunsail’s RYA Competent Crew course aims to introduce the complete beginner to cruising under sail, equipping novice sailors with the skills required to be an active and useful crew member. The course is completed over the course of five days, with 100 miles at sea and four hours of night sailing.

What should I bring to a competent crew?

  • A soft bag (about 50 – 70 litres should be more than enough!).
  • Suncream and lipsalve with UV protection – the more the merrier!
  • Sun Hat – for the same reasons as above.

There are three main options – mile-building, flotilla sailing, and bareboat charter. Each of these has different advantages and drawbacks and you may want to try more than one – even all of them!

Does competent crew expire?

This goes for the spectrum of certificates from RYA Competent Crew to RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Ocean. However, there are some certificates which do require revalidation. These certifications are renewable every 5 years and all instructors must attend a two day assessment on the water with an RYA Examiner.

How long does a RYA certificate last?

What do you wear to a sailing class?

So pack fleece tops, thermal long sleeved or short sleeved t-shirts, vests, comfortable quick drying trousers or tracksuit bottoms (not denim as that takes too long to dry). Gloves, hat, scarf and plenty of thick socks. Hot weather? Shorts and t-shirts, again quick drying fabrics are best.
