In other words, cadmium sulfide sees a color spectrum of light very similar to that seen by most people’s eyes. Thus CdS cells can measure the useful light that is illuminating the roadway and being seen by people.
How long should a photocell last?

If incident light on a photoresistor exceeds a certain frequency, photons absorbed by the semiconductor give bound electrons enough energy to jump into the conduction band. The resulting free electrons (and their hole partners) conduct electricity, thereby lowering resistance.
How do CD discs work?
The surface of the CD contains one long spiral track of data. The CD drive shines a laser at the surface of the CD and can detect the reflective areas and the bumps by the amount of laser light they reflect. The drive converts the reflections into 1s and 0s to read digital data from the disc.

How do you test if a photocell is working?
A simple test is to use an ohm meter and watch the resistance vary with light intensity. In the above circuit (Fig. A) R1 is a CdS photocell in series with a 1000-ohm resistor. The 5 volts form VCC divides across R1 and R2 in proportion to their resistance.
What can affect the photocell reading?
Note that the artificial lights and reflection from a white surface, depending on the photocell placement, may also affect the photocell reading. When determining the ON trigger, one would want the least amount of ambient light with the highest amount of artificial light.
