What is an OD tape?
This is a 12ft / 3.5m length steel flexible tape that is a half-inch wide. It comes housed inside a durable ABS case. A strong magnetic disc on the back of the case allows you to mount the tape on a metal surface.
What is a diameter scale?
The inches in diameter by 64ths scale is designed specifically for measuring diameters such as pipes. When you hold the tape around a pipe at the line which is ~1.5″ from the hook (on the backside of the blade), then measure where it overlaps. That point is the diameter.
What is diameter of a pipe?
The outside diameter is from outside edge to outside edge across the pipe. To find it, measure around the circumference of the pipe with flexible measuring tape. Divide the circumference by pi, or about 3.14159.
How is pipe measured?
Pipe is usually measured by NOMINAL PIPE SIZE (NPS). For sizes larger than 12-inch, NPS corresponds to the actual outside diameter. For each nominal pipe size, the outside diameter (O.D.) remains relatively constant; the variations in wall thickness affect only the inside diameter (I.D.).
How does a diameter tape work?
Diameter tapes work because of the relationship of the circumference to the diameter of a circle. The circumference is of course pi times the diameter, or 3.14159 times the diameter. The other side of the tape is a regular inch scale, for making regular measurements.
What is diameter tape or Girthing tape?
A diameter tape (D-tape) is a measuring tape used to estimate the diameter of a cylinder object, typically the stem of a tree or pipe.
How do you measure pipe diameter with a tape measure?
To find it, measure around the circumference of the pipe with flexible measuring tape. Divide the circumference by pi, or about 3.14159. For example, if the circumference is 12.57 inches (319 mm), you would divide by pi, and get an outside diameter of about 4 inches (100 mm).
