What is iron dextran used for?
Iron dextran is an iron replacement product that is used to treat iron deficiency, such as anemia (not enough iron in the blood) or blood loss in patients with certain conditions (eg, hemophilia, gastrointestinal bleeding).

Iron dextran injection is in a class of medications called iron replacement products. It works by replenishing iron stores so that the body can make more red blood cells.
How is INFeD given?
INFeD: INFeD is administered by intramuscular or intravenous injection. Before administering therapeutic doses, a test dose of 25 mg (0.5 mL) should be given. Give INFeD test doses gradually over at least 30 seconds. Observe the patient for at least 1 hour after test dose administration.
How often is INFeD given?
Individual doses of 2 mL or less may be given on a daily basis until the calculated total amount required has been reached. INFeD is given undiluted at a slow gradual rate not to exceed 50 mg (1 mL) per minute.

INFeD (Iron Dextran Injection USP) is a dark brown, slightly viscous sterile liquid complex of ferric hydroxide and dextran for intravenous or intramuscular use. Each mL contains the equivalent of 50 mg of elemental iron (as an iron dextran complex), approximately 0.9% sodium chloride, in water for injection.

What are the likely benefits of Iron injections? The infusion is a rapid and effective means to correct iron deficiency. Within days you may notice that you are less tired, have more energy, better concentration and become less breathless. Anaemia will be corrected in most people within 10 days to 20 days.
Is Infed safe?
When these formulations are excluded, the LMW formulations (such as INFED) are safe with a SAE rate of less than 1:200,000 administrations. Premedication, while commonly used, is not recommended in the absence of multiple drug allergies or known asthma.
