Why was Modecate discontinued?

BMS have notified the end of production of Modecate Injection due to the unpredictability of supply of fluphenazine decanoate, the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API), from the third party manufacturer, Fine Chemicals of South Africa. There are no other manufacturers of API worldwide.

When do you give Modecate injection?

Adults Modecate Concentrate is usually given every 2 to 5 weeks.

  1. Your first dose will be 12.5mg.
  2. This may be increased up to 100mg depending on your illness.
  3. The usual dose is 12.5 to 100mg.

How do you administer a Modecate injection?

Initially 0.125ml ie. 12.5mg (0.0625ml ie 6.25mg for patients over 60) by deep intramuscular injection into the gluteal region. The onset of action generally appears between 24 and 72 hours after injection and the effects of the drug on psychotic symptoms become significant within 48 to 96 hours.

How long does Modecate take to work?

It is thought to work by reducing dopamine (a chemical messenger) in certain areas of the brain. The effects of this medication on symptoms of schizophrenia begin to appear within 48 to 96 hours after being injected.

Is Modecate still available?

Fluphenazine decanoate 25mg/1ml and 100mg/1ml solutions for injection ampoules (Modecate and Modecate Concentrate) manufactured by Sanofi, have been discontinued for some time and stock of any remaining batches will now have expired.

What are the side effects of Modecate?

Common side effects of fluphenazine include:

  • Anticholinergic effects (dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, dizziness, decreased sweating, difficulty urinating)
  • Sedation.
  • Weight gain.
  • Erectile dysfunction.
  • Infrequent or missed menstrual periods.
  • Drowsiness.
