Provisional accreditation means an accreditation decision that results when a previously unaccredited entity has demonstrated satisfactory compliance with a subset of standards during a preliminary on-site evaluation.
What is a BABCP accreditation?
Accreditation means that a CBT therapist has both core professional mental health training or recognised equivalent, as well as specific CBT training. To be accredited, our members must have applied and demonstrated that they meet high standards of training and experience in CBT.
How do I become a BABCP accredited?
Provisional Accreditation
- You must be a BABCP member.
- You must first have a mental health Core Profession or demonstrate the equivalent through completing a KSA portfolio.
- You must be in current CBT practice when you apply.
- You will need to provide evidence that you meet the Minimum Training Standards (MTS)
How long is BABCP accreditation?
18 weeks
The accreditation process takes an average of 18 weeks from the date you paid. It can be quicker at quiet times and take longer at busy ones, especially if your application includes a KSA portfolio.

BABCP stands for the British Association for Behavioural & Cognitive Psychotherapies. It has been the lead organisation for CBT in the UK since 1972. BABCP members work in the NHS, social care, education and universities. BABCP also provides accreditation to those who practise CBT in the NHS and privately.
Do you need to be accredited to be a Counsellor?

What happens if you go to a PA school that is not accredited?
Provisional accreditation is limited to three years. If a program cannot satisfy ARC-PA’s requirements in that time, they lose their accreditation status, and may not admit students. Starting in an unaccredited program is risky.
How long does it take to get BABCP accreditation?
If you have completed a Level 2 BABCP Accredited course you should complete a Level 2 Provisional Application. The second stage is to apply for Full Accreditation 12 months after the award of Provisional Accreditation.
What is the difference between provisional accreditation and full accreditation?
You will appear as accredited on the CBT Register once you have your Provisional Accreditation – we don’t differentiate between provisionally and fully accredited therapists in terms of their suitability to practice. If you have completed a Level 2 BABCP Accredited course you should complete a Level 2 Provisional Application.
When can I apply for proprovisional accreditation?
Provisional Accreditation is the first stage of accreditation. As long as you meet the criteria, y ou can apply at any time once you have evidence of graduation from your CBT training – there is no time limit – but you must be in CBT practice.
