What is round atelectasis?
Rounded atelectasis represents an unusual form of lung collapse that occurs usually adjacent to scarred pleura and can be mistaken for lung cancer. It has been referred to as folded lung, Blesovsky syndrome, atelectatic pseudotumor, and shrinking pleuritis with atelectasis (1).
What causes rounded atelectasis?
Rounded atelectasis typically forms as a result of a pre-existent pleural effusion. The pleural effusion causes the adjacent lower lobe to float upward and compresses the adjacent lung. A cleft or fold occurs in the visceral pleura if the rate of pleural fluid accumulation exceeds the rate of alveolar air resorption.
What is the best treatment for atelectasis?
Atelectasis treatment can include breathing or coughing exercises, inhaled medicines, breathing devices, or surgery. Atelectasis usually gets better with time or treatment.
What are the types of atelectasis?
Resorptive Atelectasis When airways are obstructed there is no further ventilation to the lungs and beyond.
How does COPD cause atelectasis?
Lung Disease Induced Atelectasis. One particular risk is atelectasis, or simply put, the collapsing of a lung. COPD and atelectasis symptoms can feed off of one another, causing the two to occur together often. Atelectasis is categorized by the collapsing of the small air sacs positioned in the bottom and back of the lungs.
What does subsegmental atelectasis mean?
Subsegmental atelectasis is a descriptive term for a minor peripheral form of lung atelectasis. Some authors also term it discoid atelectasis or plate-like atelectasis due to its appearance. It is usually due to a lack of adequate inspiration, and not due to any underlying airway obstruction.
