I use dry erase markers on mine. It wipes off easily. I have also used permanent marker. The permanent market came off easily after writing over it with a dry erase marker.

How do you store your battle mat?
The mat wipes clean after each use, in my experience, up to a week after being drawn on. I store it in a thick, cardboard tube, along with other vinyl battlemats of various shapes and sizes. I highly recommend this mat, both for the discerning and pragmatic DM/GM; while visually pleasing, it also serves a very practical purpose.
