If you want to autocross and stay in a stock street class you will need to use 8″ wide wheels with a stock offset. You can fit a 255×35-18 tire without a problem.
What size are track wheels?
The sweet spot for most of our muscle cars and track cars is 17- or 18-inch wheels. This isn’t just my opinion, but that of many industry insiders. The 12- or 13-inch rotors usually chosen by the road racing crowd fit in these wheels just fine, and don’t need the additional clearance given by a 19-inch or larger wheel.

Wider is almost always better. It is usually worth doing whatever you have to do to get a wider tire under the car, even if it means a larger tire diameter. Every single time we put a wider tire under the car (even if it was taller) we went faster.

Larger wheels for the same rolling diameter would result in less deep sidewalls, which flex less than deeper sidewalls. That will improve cornering ability through the stiffer sidewalls. But unless you are a professional driver on a race track, you will not notice a performance difference.
