Through the 1980s, Sears was the largest retailer in the United States. In 2018, it was the 31st-largest. After several years of declining sales, Sears’s parent company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on October 15, 2018.
What really killed Sears?
In the case of Sears, former chief executive Eddie Lampert’s hubris led to the company’s demise. He did not respond to the rapidly changing retail environment as companies like Target and Best Buy did. Those of us in the retail industry could see the death spiral happening in real time.
What caused the downfall of Sears?
As stores fell further into disrepair they couldn’t generate enough to finance their own store upgrades leading to a negative investment cycle which generates lower and lower sales and less money to invest over time. Edward Lampert, Sears’ former Chairman and CEO is credited with much of this lack of investment.
How many Sears are there left?
As of December 19, 2021 there are 25 of these Sears stores remaining, but we note below the ones soon closing and will work to keep this list maintained rapidly as closures happen.
Is Sears finally closing?
In 2019, the newly formed holding company Transformco acquired 425 stores (including 223 Sears and 202 Kmart locations) from Sears Holdings for $5.2 billion. The Pasadena and Downey closures will leave just four California stores in Burbank, Whittier, Concord and Stockton, according to the Sears website.
When will Sears go bankrupt?
Following its bankruptcy departure in February 2019, Sears has shuttered hundreds of shops. The firm had just 182 Sears and Kmart locations at the end of February, down from 400 a year ago and 1,000 two years ago. As of April 4, all Sears-branded stores were shuttered due to health concerns.

How does Sears stay in business?
Sears is actually in a death spiral and stays in business because it is being sold off piece by piece. This is way more profitable than ensuing a liquidation process to dissolve the assets.
