Which is better zinc or aluminum anodes?
Advantages of aluminium anodes Capacity: The electrochemical capacity is more than 3 times higher than of the same mass of zinc (you can protect more with less). Driving voltage: Aluminium anodes has a relatively high driving voltage. This means that it provides better distribution of the current, compared with zinc.
What is the difference between alpha 1 and Gen 2?
The Alpha Gen II upper and lower housings are fastened together with two through bolts on either side of the drive along with the front and rear bolts, while the Gen 1 drives use one stud visible on either side. Alpha Ones have two studs under the ventilation plate just above the prop.
Do I need anodes in freshwater?
ONLY USE MAGNESIUM ANODES IN FRESH WATER! The salt content found in brackish or salt water dramatically increases the rate of corrosion. If a magnesium anode is used in salt/brackish water it will corrode very quickly, possibly lasting only a very short time thus leaving your hull and drive completely unprotected.
What are best anodes?
Magnesium for fresh water ONLY: Since fresh water is much less conductive than salt water, magnesium anodes are the best choice because they’re more active (less noble) than zinc or aluminum so they will protect your engine parts more effectively.
What size anode do I need?
As a rule you want the anode to be “tip to toe” running the full height or length of the tank. If you cant see your brand on the chart then just measure the length of the tank and pick the closest length of anode. If the anode is too long they can be simply cut to length with a hack saw.
How much horsepower can a MerCruiser Alpha one handle?
300HP
The Alpha drives are rated for up to 300HP. Not really sure of max torque but probably less than 300 ft/lb. Some people have success using the Alpha drives with higher HP & torque by avoiding quick holeshots and taking it easy on the throttle. Our warranty does not cover applications over 300HP.
When should Mercruiser anodes be replaced?
Remember, anodes provide less and less protection as they dissolve, so be sure to change yours when they are 50 percent consumed.
What type of anodes do you use in freshwater?
magnesium
The common anode for fresh water is magnesium. Aluminum is a good “catch all” anode meaning a boat that frequents both fresh and salt has decent protection in either environment. The quality of the anode and the purity of the aluminum or magnesium is also important.

What anodes do I need for my MerCruiser?
Anodes are worthwhile investments no boat should be without! Wholesale Marine carries a wide selection of MerCruiser anodes specifically designed to protect nearly every MerCruiser model made. These anodes are available in zinc, aluminum and magnesium. Here’s how to tell which you’ll need for your MerCruiser:
What kind of anode do you use for a sterndrive?
Mercruiser Sterndrive Magnesium Anodes. Mil-Spec magnesium anodes are designed to provide superb corrosion protection for Mercruiser outdrives that operate in fresh water only. They are the strongest anodes available but should not be used in salt or brackish water.
