Marsiling Road was named after the residence of wealthy merchant Lim Nee Soon, Marsiling Villa. “Marsiling” is derived from Maxi village, Lim’s hometown in Chaozhou, Guangdong province, China. During the 19th century, the area around Marsiling Road was occupied by a few villages (kampongs).
