Who can submit to REF?
To be eligible for return, outputs must be authored by ‘Category A submitted’ staff or staff previously employed as ‘Category A eligible’ when the output was first made publicly available. Outputs co-authored by Category C staff may be submitted within the min. 1 and max. 5 limits of the Category A staff co-author.

The stated purposes of the REF are to “provide accountability for public investment in research and produce evidence of the benefits”, “provide benchmarking information and establish reputational yardsticks” and “inform the selective allocation of funding for research”.

The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is a research impact evaluation of British higher education institutions. The next iteration of the REF was to be in 2021, continuing the previous assessment model of focusing on research outputs, research impact and research environment.

Who is eligible to be returned to the ref?
If you’re academic staff at a UK higher-education institution, you will be eligible if: you have a contract of 0.2 FTE or greater in a submitting HE institution on the census date and your primary job description is ‘research only’ or ‘teaching and research”. Research assistants (e.g. co-investigator) are not eligible to be returned to the REF.
