Why was the Berlin TV tower built?
In the early 1950s, Socialist Unity Party (SED) leaders in East Berlin wanted to build a tower to transmit GDR television signals. Intended to represent the power and efficiency of socialism, the tower was to be built on the Müggelberge – a wooded area in Berlin’s Treptow-Köpenick quarter.
